A Brief History of Stuart, Florida
Named after the Stuart that carves through its dramatic sandstone valley, this charming Westshore community was first settled in the early 1800s as part of Dover Township. Officially incorporated as a village in 1903 and as a city in 1930, Stuart attracted affluent Port St. Lucieers drawn to its natural beauty, safe neighborhoods, and proximity to the Ocean.
The city's development was closely tied to the construction of the Detroit-Stuart Bridge in the 1910s, which improved connectivity to Port St. Lucie and fueled residential growth. Stuart became known for its excellent public schools, well-maintained parks, and a quaint Old River district that retains its small-town character. With a population of roughly 20,000, Stuart continues to be one of St. Lucie County's most desirable residential communities.
